Botanical name : Swertia Chitrata

Family : Gentianaceae
Chemical constituents : Chirata is found to contain bitter yellow acid known as ophelic acid and two bitter glycosides chiratin and amarogentin. Chiratin is not a pure substances. Amarogentin is a phenol carbonic acid ester of sweroside, a substance related to gentiopicrin. It also contains yellow crystalline substance used in dyeing. The two alkaloids repoted in chirata are known as gentianine and gentiocrucine.

Uses : Bitter tonic, dyspepsia, epilepsy and also used in                       chronic fever.

Swertia Chirata is a bitter tonic. It works as laxative and as an appetizer because it stimulates the release of bile. Swertia Chirata also corrects the disordered process of nutrition and restores the normal function of the system.
